What Is Acne?

Having bad acne can be one of the most horrible experiences a person can have at a young age or even in adulthood. However, not many people know about acne. Many people think that acne is simply a pimple on their face, but many are not sure what the causes of acne are.  Nevertheless, there is more to acne than just a pimple.

What Are The Causes Of Acne?

There is no exact known cause of acne. However, doctors have attributed the actions of hormones and skin glands to this skin disorder. One of the hormones that can lead to development of acne is the androgen hormone. This hormone increases in males and females at puberty age. The hormone acts on the oil glands found on the skin and causes enlargement of the sebaceous gland. Continued hormone actions leads to plugging of pores and eventually and outbreak of a lesion. This becomes what many people refer to as zits or pimples. In most cases, these lesions occur on the face, neck, chest, back or shoulders.

Changes in the hormonal system that are associated with use of birth control pills may also result in an acne outbreak. These can be seen when one is starting or stopping using the pills. Other drugs such as lithium and androgens also cause acne. Use of greasy cosmetics can also alter follicle cells making them stick at one point and eventually develop a plug.

Genetic factors or heredity is another factor that can be attributed to the development of acne. There are studies that have revealed that some people with acne problems have parents who have had acne. Such people have a history of acne along their family tree.

There are many people suffering from acne problems. This makes it the most common skin disorder. Although it is not a serious threat to human health, it can cause permanents scars and disfiguration, which can result in low esteem in the affected persons.

There are acne conditions that may not be because of external factors. Such acne could be an indication of something that is wrong inside the body.

Health of the human skin depends on nutrients. Although may people neglect considering nutrients that are essential for good health of this body organ, it is very important. If this organ is not treated properly, it will suffer problems that may be revealed through clogging of pores, excessive production of sebum and reduction of the healing ability of the skin. A skin that does not get sufficient nutrients will not be able to fight bacteria.

Some nutritional remedies of acne include the following;

  • Chromium diet: Many people know chromium for weight loss. It is also very vital in healing the infections of the skin. Having diet rich in chromium will help in healing acne on the skin and also prevent breakouts in the future.
  • Carrots diet:  Carrots are a good source of vitamin A. This vitamin enhances strengthening of skin's protective tissue. This plays an important role in preventing acne. It helps in reducing production of sebum. Carotene found in carrots is very essential in maintaining and repairing skin tissues and mucous membranes. Vitamin A also acts as an antioxidant that is essential in getting rid of toxins from the body. A deficiency in this vitamin can actually lead to development of acne on the skin.
  • Ensure that your diet is rich in Zinc. This mineral is an important antibacterial agent. It is an important element for glands responsible for production of skin oils. Continued consumption of a diet without Zinc may cause acne.

Prevention Of Acne

  • Avoiding the use of makeup on the skin, since applying make up on the skin may contribute to clogging of pores. This will eventually lead to blackheads and pimples on the skin. A good makeup is one that is water-based.
  • Washing pillowcase on daily basis. This is very important because the face lies on the pillowcase daily. This pillowcase absorbs oils from the skin. This oil enhances accumulation of dust on the pillowcase. To avoid breakouts, it is important to always keep the pillowcase clean.
Although some acne could be because of other health conditions in the body, it is important to observe proper hygiene. This coupled with healthy diet will ensure a healthy skin capable of fighting infections that may cause acne.
