Flax Seed (Linum Usitatissimum)


Known to some people as linseed, Flax seed is the seed of the popular flax plant. It is rich in the essential fatty acid known as alpha-linolenic acid. This acid is a precursor to omega 3 fatty acids that are very important in the body. Linum Usitatissimum is a plant that has got pale blue flowers and seeds. The stems of the herb are very slender making it unique and easy to identify. The plant also has sessile alternate leaves that measure about an inch. Flax seeds are edible and can be obtained in two varieties of yellow and brown.


Medicinal Uses

There are several ways through which Flax seed can be used in medication. In fact, even in the ancient times, it was mainly used as a form of medicine. However, there are also those who used it in food. Below are some of the medicinal uses of Flax seed:

Dosage and Administration

Just like any other herbal remedy or drug, it has to be used in a given dosage. In fact, it is only when you use it according to the recommended dosage that you are able to experience its benefits. However, you should also note that since Flax seed is used for a variety of health conditions, you may find different dosages. There are certain times that the dosage for a given condition may be very different from the other. In case you intend to administer Flax seed to an adult or a child aged over 12 years of age, take between five to ten grams of the seeds either crushed or whole. The seeds should then be soaked in water for sometime. When it is ready, it should be taken in the dosage of one glass three times a day.  In order to experience the benefits of the remedy, ensure that you continue the dosage for about two or three days.


Based on the condition that is being addressed through Flax seed, it is also important to note that there is Internal and external administration. Internal administration requires that the seed to be used is coarsely ground or cracked while the external administration is whereby Flax seed is finely ground as flour or used in the form of an expellant.

The parts of Flax seed that are used in treatments are the seeds, oil, leaves and the roots. These parts are rich in various substances and nutrients like Omega 3-fatty acids, lignans, phelonic acids, protein, and dietary fiber among others.
