Thinning hair is basically the loss of hair which can be either normal or abnormal depending on the amount of hair lost per a given time. On average, a person will have approximately 100,000 hairs of which about 100 will be lost on a daily basis. Normally hair is expected to grow about one inch in two months and keep growing for about 2-6 years before it naturally falls off. Thinning hair is in many cases not a life threatening condition and at its worst it leads to early baldness especially if the condition is not a symptom of any other disease or serious medical condition.

 

 

Causes of Thinning Hair

There are numerous factors that can contribute to massive hair loss and hair thinning including;

  • Drugs. Various drug intakes can trigger or worsen thinning hair. Some of the drugs that may cause thinning hair include various diet pills, Aleve, ibuprofen, anticoagulants, birth control medications, thyroid medications gemfibrozil and clofibrate and other drugs used to lower cholesterol levels, chemotherapy, beta-blockers, drugs used for ulcers treatment and various arthritis medications.

 

  • Diseases and medical conditions. A number of medical conditions and diseases can also influence thinning hair. Some of the medical conditions that can trigger hair loss include fever and severe cases of AIDS. Hair loss caused by these factors often grows on its own without the use of any special medications or radiation therapy.

 

  • Genetic factors like hormone displacement or hormonal change especially in menopausal women, age and heredity can also lead to hair loss.

 

  • Thinning hair triggers may include conditions like menopause, childbirth, pituitary problems, protein deficiency, Vitamin A excesses,  pregnancy,  rapid lose of weight,  iron deficiency,  emotional stress (severe), malnutrition, thyroid disorders, chemotherapy, syphilis,  general anesthesia,  scarlet fever radiation and various chronic diseases.

 

  • Hair disorders including alopecia areata (a medical condition whereby the body on its own attacks its hairs and which in severity can cause all body hairs falling off), androgenetic alopecia( the most common cause of hair loss. It is hereditary), trichotillomania, telogen effluvium (sudden hair loss usually caused by birth, surgerical procedures or stress) and cicatricial alopecia (the scarring of hair follicles which eventually damages them thus prevents hair growth on the follicles).

 

 

Symptoms of Thinning Hair

There are a number of symptoms associated with thinning hair and depending on the severity or the stage of hair thinning a good number of these symptoms may vary from one person to another. Some of the most common symptoms of thinning hair include;

 

  • Receding hairline. This is the most common indicator of hair loss and although it may take some time before this happen, eventually this will if no treatment or hair loss reverse action is not taken. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common cause of thinning hair and this is usually characterized by forward to backward balding among men. In women, this cause leads to thinning of hair on the crown of the head, the front and sides as well.
  • Alopecia areata. This is basically, loss of hair in small rounded circles.
  • Malaise.
  • Mouth sores and lupus.
  • Loss of body and facial hair.
  • Scalp tightness, soreness or itchiness.
  • Very dry and brittle hair.
  • Unexplained weight loss, muscle pain depression, fatigue and oversensitivity to cold.

 

Some of the above symptoms may occur depending on your underlying cause of hair loss which may be a medical disorder, disease or condition. It is imperative that you consult your doctor one you start experiencing any of the above as such may be an indicator of a more serious medical condition that you may initially anticipate.

 

 

Home remedies for Thinning Hair

While there are numerous treatments and commercially produced drugs for thinning hair, there are healthier and more effective ways of dealing with hair loss. Some of the home remedies for thinning hair include.  Remember, you should always consult with your physician in order to get a proper diagnosis and before trying to incorporate these home remedies yourself!  

 

  • Aloe Vera. Crush your natural aloe Vera to make sort of a gel and mix this with almond oil. Rub the mixture onto your scalp for about two minutes and let it sit on the scalp for about half an hour before washing it off with a mild shampoo. The mixture will soothe the scalp and rejuvenate it thus allowing it to breathe freely and thus energizing hair growth.

 

  • Olive oil. Rub some olive oil onto the scalp and let it sit on it over the night and rinse it afterwards. The olive oil will help you remove the dirt and grime from the hair follicles thus allowing for the growth of hair.
