The body can sometimes react to something that it does not like. This reaction causes you to throw up or vomit. In children, vomiting occurs due to viral gastroenteritis. Apart from that, other triggers of vomiting involve underlying medical disorder, motion sickness, a migraine sickness, or even a reaction either to medication or food. A person might vomit because of even a serious injury. It is advisable to contact a doctor if vomiting starts after a head injury. Though vomiting to most people is taken lightly, if it continues, it is better to see a doctor since such can result to serious conditions. Almost everyone would like to avoid the horrible sensations as well as the social reactions that occur after vomiting.   • Infections from virus or poor food pattern can also lead to vomiting.
  • Stomach flu is also a common cause of emesis in many.
  • Food poisoning caused by a bacterial toxin may also lead to significant signs of emesis.
  • Eating disorders  such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa
  • To eliminate an ingested poison some poisons should not be vomited as they may be more toxic when inhaled or aspirated; it is better to ask for help before inducing vomiting
  • After surgery ,postoperative nausea and vomiting
  • Disagreeable sights, smells or thoughts (such as decayed matter, others' vomit, thinking of vomiting), etc.
  • Violent emotions
  • High doses of ionizing radiation will sometimes trigger a vomit reflex in the victim
  • Nervousness
  • Performing physical activity (such as swimming) shortly after a meal.
  • Being struck hard in the stomach.
  • Rumination syndrome, an under diagnosed and poorly understood disorder that causes sufferers to regurgitate food shortly after ingestion.



Symptoms of Vomiting

There are a number of symptoms of vomiting. Some of them include the following,

  • when vomiting leads to dehydration from loss of fluids, the affected person may have increased thirst, dry lips, and dry mouth. The person may not urinate often or urine will be darker in color. In children, signs of dehydration include dry lips and mouth, sunken eyes, rapid breathing, lethargy, and dry diapers, indicating the child is not producing urine.
  • vomiting, however, frequently improves the sensation of nausea, at least temporarily. Vomiting occurs when the stomach forcefully expels its contents out of the mouth. When vomiting continues after all the food and liquid has been forced out, it is called the dry heaves.

Home Remedies for Vomiting

Home remedies are used by numerous people from around the world. However, it is recommended that most of these treatments should be used for academic purposes only. This is because according to specialists, there are no ways to test or verify every remedy. For infants about six months of age, offer up to ½ oz. of an over-the-counter electrolyte solution, every 15 or 20 minutes. Withhold formula and breast milk until the vomiting ceases. If an infant under one month of age vomits, immediately call a doctor. For older children, offer up to 2 table spoons of clear liquids every 15 minutes. Avoid giving the child milk, which may prolong the vomiting. It is important to see a doctor for advice before using home remedies to treat a child's vomiting. Here are home treatments for adults: Remember, you should always consult with your physician in order to get a proper diagnosis and before trying to incorporate these home remedies yourself!  


  • Hydrate– Staying hydrated is the biggest concern during a vomiting episode. Sipping clear soup broths or herbal teas will replace fluids and some teas may ease nausea. Try steeping grated ginger in a cup of boiling water, or add a pinch of powdered ginger to hot water. Signs of dehydration include a dry mouth, reduced tears, and fewer wet diapers than normal, sunken eyes, weakness dry or wrinkled skin and rapid breathing. Call a doctor immediately if signs of dehydration are present.


  • Lie Down– Lying down may help if motion sickness or food poisoning is the cause of vomiting. Sip on clear liquids to prevent dehydration. Suck on ice chips if you can’t tolerate drinking liquids and place a cool wet washcloth on your face or forehead. Get comfortable and rest. Skip solid foods except for a nibble on an occasional saltine cracker or small piece of dry toast.


  • Try This– After eight hours without vomiting, offer solid foods gradually. Such solid foods are bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. These foods are bland and less likely to trigger a recurring vomiting episode. Eat small food portions for the first 24 hours after vomiting subsides. You may also add clear soups and boiled potatoes to the menu, but avoid fatty foods and dairy products during this time.


  • Spearmint and peppermint- These herbal remedies have menthol which gives the mouth a cooling feel. They also calm the digestive tract and the muscles found on its lining. In addition, these herbs helps in relieving headache and some other pain associated with vomiting. For effective treatment, these herbs should be used on daily basis. They are easy to prepare by just boiling water and adding them to make tea. Thus, they are used as herbal tea.


  • Ginger- Ginger is also another herb that is very effective in treating vomiting problem. It also help in easing stomach pain. In addition, it works as an anti-inflammatory. It gives the body a soothing sensation which is very important in stopping vomiting. It can be used in form of teas, spices or supplements. This herb is very effective in treating vomiting and it has been used by many people with this problem and proven to work.


  • Chamomile- This herb is also very effective in easing vomiting. It has soothing and calming compounds that are very effective in easing vomiting and stomach aches. This herb is available in the form of supplements and teas. The best way of taking this herb when trying to ease vomiting is in the form of tea. You can add organic honey t o improve its taste.


  • Slippery elm- This is another herb that is very effective in easing vomiting. It has mucilage, a thick gel that coats the stomach and the digestive system reducing the acid burn that cause vomiting. Mucilage is slippery and it also has antioxidants that play a significant role in reducing inflammation.


  • Try These– Other herbal remedies for vomiting include papaya, red raspberry and licorice root. Nevertheless, it is always advisable to have sufficient information before starting to use any of these remedies especially if you are on other medications. 




Diet for Vomiting

According to experts, when a child vomits, he or she propels the contents of the stomach up and out. In case the vomiting is as a result of   a viral gastrointestinal disease, the child is likely to fall ill quickly and he or she is also likely to recover quickly. Vomiting repeatedly leads to dehydration. This is why, it is necessary to drink plenty of liquids frequently. Such liquids include,


  • water
  • ice chips
  • a commercial electrolyte solution such as Pedialyte
  • An electrolyte solution mixed with a small amount of non-acidic fruit juice, such as apple juice. Avoid milk and acidic juices such as orange juice.


Once your child has stopped vomiting for about 8 hours, you can begin to reintroduce solid foods. Start slowly with very bland foods such as crackers, toast and broth.



Prevention of Vomiting

Vomiting is very disgusting and can be so embarrassing especially in a public place. But it can be prevented. Here are some of the things that you can do to prevent vomiting,


  • Use Cardamom, an Indian herb-it can help settle a stomach. Crush cardamom and heat it in a frying pan. Mix this warm powder with some honey and take a spoonful when nausea strikes.
  • Mix mint, lime, ginger, and honey into a tea. Sip slowly to help relax an angry digestive tract. However, more mint might be the last thing you want to taste if your vomiting is related to drinking Mojito’s all night. In that case, just chilled lime juice will also do the trick. If motion sickness causes you to feel nauseous, try this tea an hour before you travel.
  • Another powerful anti-vomiting remedy is onions. “Juice” an onion by dicing it and squeezing it through a cheese cloth or paper towel. A juicer, food processer, or blender could also be used. Swallow a spoonful of onion juice quickly, followed immediately by some cool Peppermint tea. Wait for a few minutes to let your stomach adjust, and then continue sipping more Peppermint tea until the urge to vomit passes.
  • Acupressure can be used to stop vomiting from occurring if you use it at the first signs of nausea. The belief behind acupressure is that life energy, can become blocked, which prevents needed energy from flowing naturally through the body. By applying pressure to specific pressure points, the flow of qi can be restored, which will prevent that nauseated feeling.
  • For nausea, one place you will want to squeeze is the inside of the forearm, just a few inches above the wrist. Use your thumb and massage firmly.This is recommended for pregnant women, people undergoing chemotherapy, and those prone to motion sickness almost anything that makes you want to vomit.
  • Another spot to apply pressure is the webbing or padding between the first finger and thumb. This spot is best accessed through the back portion of the hand. Pregnant women avoiding morning sickness should not try this pressure point.
  • The third spot is on the foot, between the knuckles and tendons of the second and third toes. For best results, try these spots on both side of the body.
  • Peppermint can also help calm the urge to purge if inhaled. When sipping the tea mentioned, make sure to take deep breaths of the vapors escaping the top of the cup. This will also help calm your stomach.
  • Other scents to tame the tummy are lavender, fennel, and damask rose. You can use essential oils applied to your wrists or pulse points. Candles and incense that have these aromas may also help prevent vomiting.
