Bursitis is defined as a bursa swelling (a small bag of fluid) that tends to mitigate and lubricate various areas of the body such as bones, joints, knees, elbows, heels, hips, shoulders and muscles among others.  In case joints rub each other or repetitive movement is made within a specific period of time, bursitis is caused. A majority of people who tend to develop it will experience a lot of pain on the affected region and swelling. This in turn will cause the person to have difficulty when it comes to movement and at the same time, can feel some tenderness if the swelling is touched. A mild bursitis can easily improve within few weeks but a severe one may last for more than 6 months which is a clear indication that an individual has an infection. In case you have infected bursae, you can be sure that it will persist until you are treated surgically for the fluid to be drained completely.

 

 

Causes of Bursitis

If you have bursitis, it simply means that you need to give a red flag to all the hobbies you enjoy doing such as sports since it may be very painful for you.  There are several causes of this condition that one needs to know of.  They include:

 

  • Injury and overdo of your joints – For instance if you have a hard fall anywhere e.g. on a pavement and you happen to land on your joints (either hip, knee or shoulder joints), you will automatically get bursitis.

 

  • Repetitive motions – There are some jobs or activities that require individuals to perform repetitive motions such as sports. When this is prolonged, you stand a high chance of experiencing bursitis on your knees, elbows or shoulders.

 

  • Sitting for Long Periods of Time: There are some people who have a tendency of sitting for long periods of time on hard surfaces especially if they are idle. It is believed that this is a major cause of bursitis especially in your rears.

 

  • Wearing Worn out Shoes- This is a cause of bursitis due to the fact that there your feet or foot will lack the required support and cushioning from the worn out shoes. If you walk in such shoes for a long period of time, bursitis will develop in the joints of your toes and ankles.

 

 

Symptoms of Bursitis

It is believed that as people continue to age, they become vulnerable to the symptoms of bursitis. Some of the symptoms that you need to be on the lookout for include the following:

 

  • Swelling – Due to the inflammation an individual experiences, his or her joints may swell and the region where the swelling is may feel warm especially when touched.

 

  • Redness – Mostly, the skin near the affected joints may become red. For instance, you may spot some redness on the elbows, shoulders, knees and even on the toes.

 

  • Pain – In most cases, an individual may experience pain especially when certain movements are made.  Additionally, if the area that has been affected is put under severe pressure, pain may be experienced.

 

  • Stiffness – This is another perfect symptom of bursitis whereby an individual will experience stiffness in the joints that may in turn cause limitation on motions.

 

  • Fever – This is a major symptom of bursitis and it comes about if the inflammation is very severe. When this happens, it is highly advisable for you to seek medical attention as soon as possible so as other complications can be kept at bay.

 

 

Bursitis Home Remedies

There are various remedies; home based, herbal based, medical based, natural and artificial based that one can use in order to keep bursitis at bay. However, the remedies used will solely depend on the severity of the inflammation among other things. Remember, you should always consult with your physician in order to get a proper diagnosis and before trying to incorporate these home remedies yourself.

 

  • Devils Claw- This is one of the most common herbal remedies for bursitis and this is understandable because is a well known pain and inflammatory reliever. On a daily basis, you should take 1,000 mg capsules three times daily in order to note relief.

 

  • Willow- Willow helps relieve inflammation and pain. For the best results, you should drink at least three cups of this tea. It works in the same manner that aspirin does and alternatively, you can take a teaspoon of tincture two times three times daily.

 

  • Boswellia Serrata- This is an excellent remedy for joint health and it also increases supply of blood to the joints thus keeping the soft tissue supple and nourished. In addition tot his, it also contains some pain relieving and anti-inflammatory properties and it should be taken as directed in order to deliver relief from the condition.

 

  • Turmeric- This is one of the most effective treatments for not only bursitis but other types of ailments. It is also an ingredient in curry and it acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent thus offering relief. You should eat foods that are curried in order to get relief and you can also opt supplementation but make sure you follow instructions.

 

  • Pineapple- It contains bromelain enzyme which has anti-inflammatory properties. It aids with the reduction of swelling, reduces pain and speeds up healing. While supplements are fine, it is advisable to opt for fresh servings of the fruit.

 

  • Ginger Tea- This should be prepared with a mixture of ginger root and some honey. Apart from providing relief, it also helps fight cases of inflammation and also helps with reduction of pain.

 

  • Willow Herbal Tea- This is another effective herbal remedy and it should be prepared using a mixture of 2 grams of willow bark in 8 glasses of water. 

 

  • Cold TreatmentThis is a home based remedy whereby all you need is to apply something cold e.g. ice on the affected area. The main aim of doing this is to reduce any inflammation as well as irritation on the area that has been affected by bursae. Using cold treatment will as well keep high levels of pain at bay.

 

  • Rest:  Keeping off vigorous physical activities that are unnecessary and giving the affected region time to rest is a good natural remedy.  Giving it rest will in turn ensure that pain eruptions caused by bursitis will be reduced as required. Additionally, the healing process of all the inflamed tissues will be sped up leading to quick recovery.

 

  • Ginger Tea Ginger tea is considered to be the best herbal based remedy for bursitis. All you need to do is to prepare it along with honey and ginger root and then brew them together.  It is believed to be the strongest anti-inflammatory agent and a pain reliever for bursitis.

 

  • Exercise This is a natural remedy whereby, an individual is required to exercise lightly in that precise region. The main objective of carrying out the exercise is to help build up strength that will in turn play a major role in ridding of excess pain caused while making some movements here and there.

 

  • Turmeric This is a herbal based remedy that is universally used for bursitis.  It is believed that it entails an ingredient known as bormelian which acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. Here, you have to make a choice of how you want to consume it. You can choose to use it in food or applying it directly to the region that has been affected.

 

 

Diet for Bursitis

It is important to note that most bursitis is not a permanent condition simply because it arises for repetitive motion of the joints which can result to inflammation.  Bursitis treatments come in handy and one of which is a having a healthy diet that is inclusive of various supplements. They include:

 

  • Fresh Fruits and Vegetables – A healthy diet should be inclusive of both fresh fruits and vegetables on each serving on daily basis.  Choose the kinds of fruits and vegetables that you love most and include them in your diet.

 

  • Fiber and Grains – Ensure that your diet is inclusive of fiber and grains.  It is important to at least have about eleven servings of grains on daily basis.

 

  • Fatty Fish – It is important to include fatty fish in your diet simply because it contains fatty-acid oils that play a major role in reducing inflammation caused by hip bursitis.  Give a red flag to refined sugars and other processed foods.

 

  • Vitamins B, C and E – Without vitamins B, C and E, your diet is not complete and you will not have quick recovery from bursa.  Including vitamin B in your diet such as bananas and spinach will help in preventing and repairing cell damage.  Vitamin C in your diet helps in keeping bursa from becoming weak making it prone to infection as well as inflammation.  You can get this from oranges, Brussels sprouts and papaya among others.  Lastly, vitamin E in your diet will help prevent any damage on the cells simply because it is an antioxidant. Best sources include tomatoes, avocados and nuts among others.

 

 

Prevention of Bursitis

In order to prevent bursitis, there are some things that individuals need to do. Keep reading to know more about the things.

 

  • Firstly, it is important for those affected to engage in various exercises such as walking, swimming, yoga and bicycling among others on daily basis. The main reason behind doing the exercises is to ensure strong muscles are promoted.

 

  • In case it is a must for you to perform activities or hobbies that are strenuous, you are advised to do them carefully ensuring that you maintain a perfect posture throughout.

 

  • Ensure that you keep your body flexible and sturdy and this will in turn help in supporting the joints and reducing strain that may be caused on the bursa.

 

  • Take breaks whenever possible so that you can as well provide your joints a break too. Additionally, ensure that you take as much water as possible throughout the day so as you can help keep your joints lubricated. For instance, when taking a break to give your joints a chance to rest, you can seize that opportunity and drink some water.

 

  • Keep off repetitive motions to avoid bursitis on your elbows, shoulders and hips. This means that you need to change your position so that you don’t stay in the same position throughout the day.

 

  • If it is a must for you to place your joints e.g. elbows, knees, shoulders, hips etc. on solid surfaces, ensure that they all rest on cushion or a pad.  This will in turn prevent any bursitis from attacking you.
