In a day, most people urinate 4 to 8 times. Those who urinate more than 8 times a day or those who wake up more than once at night to visit the bathroom are suffering from frequent urination. Normally, the bladder has the ability of holding up to 600ml urine which translates to 2 ½ cups. When the bladder has 150ml which is ½ a cup, this is when the need to urinate is felt. There are two major ways of looking at frequent urination. It can either be as a result of increased volume of total urine produced or as a dysfunction of the storage and emptying of urine. When frequent urination is noted, it should be addressed without any reason for delay.

 

 

Causes of Frequent Urination

 Frequent urination can be as a result of different causes and some of these are as highlighted below.

 

  • Urinary infection: When the urethra lining and the bladder get inflamed or irritated as a result of byproducts infection such as white blood cells, blood and bacteria. Symptoms of Frequent Urination

  • Frequency: You will urinate more than the average 8 times in a day and during the night you will visit the bathroom more than once.
  • Urgency: This is an uncomfortable feeling and pressure in your bladder that makes you feel you have to visit the bathroom immediately.
  • Hesitancy: In this case, you might have a problem starting the flow of urine or alternatively experience sudden stoppage when urinating. This is as a result of spasms in your bladder.
  • Dysuria: This is burning sensation experienced during and immediately after urination and is often a sign of infection of the urinary tract.
  • Nocturia: You might be forced to wake up in order to urinate and it is often experienced in children.
  • Hematuria: In this case, traces of blood can be traced in the urine and they might be small clots or heavy blood. This is also a sign of infection of the urinary tract.
  • Pollakuria: Refers to frequent urination during the day.
