Genital wart is a disease that is transmitted through a sexual intercourse. It is very contagious and it may result from some categories of human papillomavirus. This disease can be spread from one person to another through skin contact. This could be during anal sex, genital or oral contact with an infected person. Warts are among the easily recognized human papillomavirus infections. Type six and eleven are responsible for about 90 percent of wart cases. It is estimated that about one and five percent of those with wart infections are capable of spreading the virus. Other types of this virus can result to cervical cancer. This is in most cases anal cancer. However, it is important to note that HPV type that causes warts is not the same as the one that cause anal or genital cancer. Nevertheless, the prevalence of warts causing virus has been ranging between 27 percent and 45 percent in people who are sexually active. Genital warts infections are high in people aged between 14 to 19 years.

 

 

Causes of Genital Warts

Genital Warts are just like other sexually transmitted diseases. Most cases of this infection are as a result of human papilloma virus. These affect the top layer of the skin in the genitals. Basically, there are many types of human papilloma virus. There are more than 100 types of HPV virus which can cause warts. However, genital warts results from a small number of strains of the HPV. Nevertheless, this strain though small is very contagious. It can easily be passed from one person to another through contact with the infected part. Types six and eleven are the most common causes of genital warts.

 

Basically, the major ways through which one can get genital warts include;

 

  • Engaging in sexual intercourse with many partners without using protection.
  • Unprotected sex with a person with warts infection.
  • Stress and also other viral infections that may occur at the same time
  • Engaging in sexual intercourse with persons with unknown sexual history
  • People who start having sexual relations at a tender age are also at a greater risk of getting warts infections
  • Chances of developing warts are also higher with people with open wounds around their genitals even if they use protection while having sex with an infected person.

 

Generally, warts will appear after approximately three months of infection. There are also cases where infected persons go for years without any sign. Thus, an individual can be a carrier of this virus for many years.

 

 

Symptoms of Genital Warts

Genital warts can develop on the vaginal wall, vulva or even between genitals on the external part. They can also develop on the cervix and the anus. In men, warts will appear on the shaft or tip of the penis. They can also develop on the anus or scrotum. People who engage in oral sex with infected persons can have them develop on the throat or mouth. Among the most noticeable symptoms include;

 

  • Discomfort in the genital region,
  • Itching of the genitals,
  • Fresh, small or even Grey swellings on the genital area,
  • A group of warts appearing together in a cauliflower shape,
  • Bleeding while having a sexual intercourse,
  • Sometimes genital warts can develop into large clusters,
  • Wart develops at a faster rate in pregnant women or people with weak immune systems,
  • They also appear faster when diabetic persons are infected.

 

These symptoms may appear together. There are also cases where one symptom appears then others follow gradually. It is important that if you notice any of these symptoms you consult your doctor for medical examination. This will help you find out if you have genital warts or if it is a different condition.

There are many home remedies for genital warts. However, the best remedies are the ones that fight wart not just from the outside, but also from the inside. Garlic is capable of killing these viruses without causing harm on beneficial bacteria. This can be crushed in the food, added to a pasta sauce or even used raw.
  • Vitamin B12: Eating foods that are rich in vitamin B12 can also help in destroying HPV. It can also hinder its replication. Foods that are rich in this vitamin include fish, meat, milk, poultry, eggs, some nuts, kelp, legumes and seeds.
  • Vitamin C: Apart from boosting the immune system, Vitamin C acts as a powerful antioxidant. It facilitates production of important immune cells. Basically, vitamin C stimulates production of white blood cells. These include lymphocytes, neutrophils and phagocytes. These are very active in attacking HPV. Prevention of Genital Warts

Most cases of genital warts infection results from sexual intercourse with infected persons. These can be prevented by;

  • Avoiding sexual intercourse with people whose sexual history you do not know
  • Having protected sex
  • Avoiding unprotected oral sex
  • Being tested before engaging in sexual intercourse. This is very important because some people have genital warts but they do not show any symptoms.
  • Avoid sharing of towels and other things that can facilitate viral transmission.
