Red Raspberry (Rubus Idaeus)


The Red Raspberry is a deciduous shrub that grows to a height of between one to two meters tall. The plant normally has got biennial and erect stems that are slightly arching. It also has got several underground stolons that spread to form thickets.  However, the young stems of Red Raspberry have got dense numerous prickles and hairs that appear as bristles. The older stems of the plant are purplish brown but often change their color to smooth brown after the epidermis that bears the bristles shreds off. Red Raspberry produces flowers that are in small terminal clusters. Besides, the plant also bears aggregate fruits that are rounded and measuring about 1 cm across. The fruits become red at maturity mostly during late summer. Red Raspberry can be cultivated at home but can also be often found in habitats that are open and disturbed.

The parts of the Red Raspberry that are recommended for use are the leaves and the fruits or the berries. However, even the roots of the plant can be used at certain times. The leaves and the berries are the ones that are used for making the herbal tea. When using the leaves and berries in making herbal tea, pick fresh ones from the plant and put in boiling water. Let the infusion stand in the boiling water for about five minutes then you can strain the infusion and drink. However, the leaves can also be dried and kept for use in future.
